The Canfield marching band started off the week with two days of practice for newcomers, while the drum line and flag line began their full sessions. They all came together on Wednesday to begin full practice together.

"It's a challenging year," said band Director Mike Kelly, "Almost one fourth of the band is new, so we are spending a lot of time on fundamentals."

The Monday practice saw the new band members, mostly freshmen, working with members of the senior leadership team. The seniors help in bringing the new members up to speed when it comes to uniform marching and turning.

Is it an earthquake in the band room at CHS or the CHS marching band’s drum line getting in a practice? Drum line members, juniors Jeff Williams and Grant Gullia, senior Nathan Metze, and juniors Ryan Jones and Lennon Sackela work the beat.

On Wednesday, the newcomers join the full band of 149 members. Kelly said most of the band will be there except for a few vacationers. He said five from this year's band are also on the football team, so only 144 will be on the field on game day this fall.

Monday did see the full drum line and flag line in practice. Drum line Director Dave Drevna said, "They are the keepers of the band. They move the band."

The drum line and flag line put in more practice time than other band members because of their importance.

Kelly said the band is working hard because they have a short time before a hectic week that starts on Aug. 26.

"Our first outing will be at the Austintown Fitch band night on Aug. 26," Kelly said. "The next night, Aug. 27, is our own band night in Cardinal Stadium."

Following the Canfield Band Night, the band members will have one day of rest because of teacher meetings before returning to play at the Canfield Fair at 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 29. They will then heading to Louisville on Aug. 30 to perform at the first Cardinal football game of the season.
