Ice Zone skates into another season

August 1, 2013
By J.T. Whitehouse , Town Crier

The Ice Zone skating rink will be open soon and will operate for another year., said general manager Skip Mackall on Thursday, July 25.

"We hope to be open by the end of August or early September," Mackall said. "We will continue to have everything we offered before."

He said the property will remain for sale and the hope is someone will buy it and keep the rink open.

The Ice Zone opened in 1997 and was closed in May after owner Bruce Zoldan decided it couldn't continue to operate and lose money.

On Monday, July 22, Mackall said a decision was made to reopen it and try to turn it around financially. While it will be in full operation soon, it will remain on the market.

In the meantime, the Phantom Hockey team will continue their practice sessions at the Boardman facility as well as other groups that call the Ice Zone home.

"We have a large figure skating club here," Mackall said. "One of the figure skaters has just qualified for a national event."

One of the problems with the facility is the replacement of the massive refrigeration equipment needed to keep the ice in good shape. He said a lot of work is being done to the Olympic rink unit and it is expected to be in good shape for the reopening in a few weeks. The second rink will remain closed.
