Manager Brian Fonderlin, kneeling, and coaches Rob Eicher and Lou Cardona gather their team for a pep talk after their first win at the State Little League Tournament in Ashtabula this week. The 12-year-old Boardman All Stars beat Dover on Monday, July 22.
Three pitchers took to the hill on Sunday, including Travis Harvey, Cardona and Cameron Kreps.
After a tie score at the end of six-inning regulation play and with two outs in the seventh, Devin Whitaker walked and advanced to third on two passed balls. A single from Harvey scored Whitaker to secure the win.
Boardman faced Guernsey County on Tuesday and scored 14 runs in a gigantic third inning, ending the game in mercy at 15-1 after four innings.
Following a slow start, the third inning broke the game wide open. Singles from Cardona, Kreps and Michael O'Horo set the pace, then a three-run homer from Troy Waliszewski amped up the pressure on Guernsey. Michael Fetsko, Whitaker, and Harvey all plated singles, while Fonderlin and Griffin Schantz walked. Defensive errors by Guernsey secured the local win.
Besides the homerun, Waliszewski earned the mound win in 2 1/3 innings, giving up only one run, one walk and one hit with four strikeouts. Cardona relieved, giving up one hit.
