Fitch tennis team preps for practice

The Fitch girls tennis team hit the courts on Monday for an open session as they prepare for the first week of official practice in a few weeks. Head coach Steve Ward said the open court option helps the girls see what areas they need to work on prior to the start of practice.

Ward said he feels good about this year's team.

"We have a lot of returners and a large group of good players this year," he said.

Having fun with a serve are Fitch seniors Ashley Hanuschak, Latrice Nelson, Sierra DuBois, and the team’s new assistant coach Kellie Wenick.

Last year, the girls finished the season at 8-11. With returning seniors Ashley Hanuschak, Latrice Nelson, and Sierra DuBois, Ward is looking to be over the 500 mark and to pass the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament.

"From one through seven, this year we should have a real solid team," Ward said.

He said he loves the ranking system where each girl is responsible for competing with her teammates for first place. When the schools get together, they will play the number one player against the opponent's number one, so if a girl wants to be the best, she has to work for it in practice. In the seven starters, Ward must also figure out who works the best together for the two doubles partners. He will have a little help this year in a new assistant coach.

"This year, Kellie Wenick will be helping out as my assistant," Ward said. "She was part of the Fitch doubles team three years ago and made second team All-Federal League as well as honorable mention. She is a very knowledgeable young coach who can relate to the girls."
