Austintown Local School's summer school program was featured at the June 11 Board of Education meeting. While some programs are already under way, the lower grades will have their fun in July.

The summer school program is led by coordinators Janet Polish and Andrew Scarmack, who has served in the position for the past three years.

"We have nine programs ranging from pre-kindergarten through high school," Scarmack said.

The programs for third grade through high school kicked off on June 3 and will run through July 3. In the high school program, there are four teachers and 92 students. The middle school program has two teachers and 38 students, and the grades three to five program has one teacher and six students this year.

Scarmack said on July 22, the summer fun camp will take place for grades one to three.

"We have five teachers involved and expect between 40 to 50 kids," he said. "The Success-by-Six program for the pre-kindergarten kids should see between 60 to 70 kids."

New high school Principal Chris Berni talked about his commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program that was developed for middle school students this year.

"I am going to work hard to develop a STEM Academy at Fitch in the 2014-15 school year," he said. "It just makes sense to continue the learning opportunities for the kids in the AMS STEM program."

He asked that the Board of Education give him 100 percent support for a high school STEM program.
