Four members of the Boardman girls track team qualified in five events for the Regional Track and Field Meet held at Austintown Fitch last weekend. The top four in each event from the Regional Meet then qualified for the Ohio State Meet to be held in Columbus on the campus of The Ohio State University.
Senior Giovanna Silvestri qualified in two events to the regionals and when the meet concluded, she had qualified to the state meet in the discus for the second year in a row. Her throw of 127 feet, 3 inches was good enough for third place and another trip to the state meet. In the shot put, she threw 38-8 1/4", finishing in fifth place and just missed making it to state by three-fourths of an inch.
Junior Morgan Hambrick finished in eighth place in the high jump with a height of 5-2, concluding a strong season after suffering a torn ACL injury last year in track. Senior Sarina Mauerman finished her successful Boardman track career by vaulting 9-6 and taking 13th place in the meet. And junior Jada Redd was the only athlete to make it to the regional meet in a running event. She qualified in the 400 meter dash and placed 13th with a time of 62.67.
"I knew Giovanna was heartbroken after missing the state in the shot by three-fourths of an inch but she picked herself back up and handled the pressure in the discus very well. She has had a tremendous track career and will represent our team, school and community very well next weekend in Columbus," said head coach Denise Gorski. "And I can't say enough about coach Tim Swartz, our throwing coach. He has had such impressive success with his throwers over the years and I believe this is his fourth thrower to make it to state in the past eight years. Morgan has had one of the most impressive comebacks I have ever seen from someone who had such a major injury as a torn ACL last year. She worked extremely hard in the off-season in the weight room. And Jada is in her first year ever running track and it has truly been a successful season for her. She was the only runner on our team to make it out of our Districts and that's a compliment to the hard work she has put in this year learning how to run the 400. She has much bigger things in store for her next year."
During the regional meet at Fitch on May 24, Silvestri was crowned district champ in shot put, throwing 39 feet, 8 1/4 inches and took second in discus with a throw of 123 feet.
Hambrick tied for second in the high jump at regionals, with a leap of 5-2 and qualified to the regional meet along with senior Sarina Mauerman who placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 9-6. Both girls are qualifying to the regional meet for the second year in a row. And Redd qualified for her first regional meet appearance in the 400 meter dash as she placed fourth running a time of 62.53.
