According to research, most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills and reading ability over the summer months. That's why the Austintown Local Schools will be holding a Summer Success Fair from 4 to 6 p.m. April 9 at the Austintown Middle School cafetorium. This event will feature academic resources for students and parents to use over the longest summer break in Austintown history.
This event will highlight various resources available to the Austintown families this summer and feature keynote speaker Chris Yambar, a 1979 Fitch graduate. In addition to his efforts as a artist, Yambar has enjoyed a rewarding career as a writer for some of the world's most beloved comic characters, including Bart Simpson, Radioactive Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, Popeye, I Dream of Jeannie, and Mister Magoo.
Also currently scheduled to attend are representatives from the Austintown Library, Barnes & Noble, OH WOW! Roger & Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science & Technology, Mahoning Valley Historical Society, Austintown Township Park, YMCA, First In Math, United Way's Success By Six, Austintown Schools Food Services' Camp Woodside, Mill Creek Metro Parks, Frank Ohl fifth-grade band, PTA, STEM Camp, and more.
Families in attendance will also have an opportunity to enter and win either a Nook Simple or a Nook HD Color. Three of each will be given away.
