Boardman, Canfield win Davis Cup divisions

Boardman-A and Canfield-A took care of their respective regular season finales to win the East and West divisions of the Boardman Tennis Center Davis Cup League. Boardman-A smashed Sharpsville 26-5 to finish 6-2-1 for the East while Canfield-A crushed Columbiana 26-8 for the West. Canfield-A ended 8-1, which matched Squaw Creek's 8-1 record but the first tiebreaker was division record, which

went to Canfield for a 5-0 to Squaw's 4-1. Poland, a 26-11 winner versus Youngstown, went

6-3 for second place in the East and the final playoff spot. The other result saw Canfield-B

dump Boardman-C 26-7.

In its own version of "March Madness" BTC Winter Junior Team Tennis saw "bracket busters" knock off the top two teams in both tiers, Sunday, March 10 at Boardman Tennis Center. In Tier 1, leader Silver dropped its second match after a 5-0 start, losing to Gold 6.5-3.5. Second-place Blue failed to gain after dropping a 7-4 decision to Maroon. Tier 2 leader Dark Blue was surprised by Light Blue 9-5. White missed a chance to move into a first-place tie when Green out volleyed them 10.5-4.5. Third-place Blaek nipped last-place Yellow 8-7.5 to move into a second-place tie. The other match saw Gray get out-gamed but still edge Red 7.5-6.5.

MVP for the week, in Tier 1, was Nicolina Frederick, who keyed Maroon's second straight upset with a 62,64,63 performance. Kelli Huffman was the Tier 2 MVP with 65(2),61,40 wins in an 8-7.5 squeaker. Honorable mentions were Kirsten Appel (T-l) and Jack Brant/Arvind Subramanyam (T-2).

Gold over Silver 6.5- 3.5; Josh Herington won thrice for Gold while No. 1 Brad Calleja won an 87(2) at No. 1 doubles with Hallie Yerian. Calleja was out for four weeks recovering from a concussion. Arti Alma Ribarevski won 64,64,41 for Silver.

Maroon over Blue 7-4; Jake Beilhart led Maroon, winning 63,62,61,63. Jack Higham led Blue, winning 87(4) & 61 at No. 1 s&d

Gray over Red 7.5 6.5; Jack Brant was a triple-winner leading Gray. Ben Martin/Solomon Weiss were 3-time-winners for Red, yielding only a combined five games.

Black over Yellow 8 -7.5; Kelli Huffman/Nicole Grimm both went 3-0 for Black. Alex Georgescu led Yellow, at No. 1, with 82 and 86 wins.

Light Blue over Dark Blue 9; Arvind Subramanyam/Janus Barredo won three times each in leading Light. Max Lee/Sydney Reider matched that for Dark.

Green over White 10.5-4.5; Glenn Christopher/Brooke Brocker both had triple wins for Green. Rohun Vangal led White, winning 64 and 81.

Tier 1 MVP Nicolina Frederick won 62,64,63 to lead Maroon's upset.

Honorable mention Kirsten Appell won 64 and 64 in Gold's 6.5-3.5 victory.

Tier 2 MVP; Kelli Huffman's 65(2),61,40 wins keyed Black's 8-7.5 victory.

Honorable mentio; Gray's Jack Brant led a close triumph with 64,61,32(1) wins.

Honorable mention Arvind Subramanyam won 61,64,21(3) in L.Blue's upset.
