Celebrating Seuss and books

March 14, 2013
Special to the Town Crier

Youngstown Christian School sponsored its second annual literacy celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday on Saturday, March 2. Students from preschool to third grade enjoyed a free goodie bag filled with gifts and a free book. The theme was "The Places You'll Go." Teachers turned their classrooms into different countries for students to interact at literacy stations which reinforced reading and writing skills. Some of the countries featured were Africa, Australia, Italy, Japan, and from our own country Hawaii and Alaska were represented. Teachers dressed the part of their countries and read stories to the students. Sherri Lallo, a second grade teacher, dressed as a chef and served pizza for her guests as the sounds of Italy played in the background. Students listened as she shared the book, "Maya's World: Angelina of Italy" by Maya Angelou. The event ended a weeklong focus on reading and writing as students participated in a writing contest and the school hosted its annual book fair.
