The Ohio Music Education Association held its annual Professional Development Conference from Feb. 7-9, in Columbus. One of the many highlights that focuses on student performance are the OMEA All-State Ensembles for band, choir, jazz band, and orchestra. More than 1,000 high students from all across Ohio submitted applications and recorded auditions in May of 2012 in hopes of being selected to perform with these prestigious ensembles. Of those applicants selected, Canfield High School was well represented with the selection of three band members who performed the closing concert of the conference on Saturday, Feb. 9. The 2013 OMEA All-State Band was under the direction of guest conductor Craig Kirchhoff, director of bands and instrumental conducting at the University of Minnesota.
Canfield High School Band members who were selected are two-time participant senior Michael Barkett on trumpet, senior Hayley Ward on alto saxophone, and junior Emily Damelio on oboe. Damelio earned the high honor of principal chair oboe. Of special note, Barkett also performed with the internationally acclaimed Cleveland Youth Orchestra during the conference. He is the son of James and Elyse Barkett.
Michael has studied trumpet for eight years. He is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and Crimson Brass Quintet as well as president of Student Council. Michael has performed in numerous honor ensembles including the OMEA District 5 Honors Band in 2011 and 2012, the Ohio State Honors Band in 2011, and the Ohio Band Directors Conference Honors Band in 2011. Upon graduation, Michael will be majoring in music performance the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University with a pre-law minor.

Ward is the daughter of Bob and Laura Ward. Hayley has studied saxophone for eight years and piano for 12 years. Hayley is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band and Chamber Choir. For 12 years, she has received unanimous Superior ratings at the Ohio Federation of Music Club's competition and this March she will receive the President's Gold Cup. She has also received the Paderewski Award for excellence from the National Piano Guild and will be awarded the National Guild High School Diploma in May. Hayley has also won the Youngstown Music Teachers' Association's Masters Competition for 10 years. She has received Superior ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble competitions. Hayley was a member of the Ohio State University Honor Band in 2011 and District 5 Honor Band in 2012. Upon graduation, Hayley plans on majoring in music.
Damelio is the daughter of Charles and Kathleen Damelio and has studied oboe for six years. She is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band, Chamber Choir, and Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra. Emily has consistently earned Superior ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble competitions. She has been selected to perform with numerous honors ensembles including the Ohio State Honors Band in 2012 and 2013, the Ohio Band Directors Conference Honors Band in 2011, and the OMEA District 5 Honors Band in 2012. For the 2013 OMEA All-State Band, Emily earned principal chair oboe. Emily plans on majoring music when she graduates from Canfield in the spring of 2014.
