Coming into the tournament the No. 1 seed, the Boardman High School freshmen girls basketball team defeated Massillon Jackson High School 39-32 to become the Federal League champions on Saturday, Feb. 16.
The Spartans were down by seven points at halftime, but rallied in the second half with great defensive play led by Katie Platt, who also added four points to spark the Spartan comeback.
In addition, Krista Johnson led all scorers with 15 points, seven in the fourth quarter alone.

The Boardman High School freshmen girls basketball team won the Federal League championship on Saturday, Feb. 16, defeating Massillon Jackson, 39-32 at Hoover High School. Team members include, in front, Brittany Kuehn, Cassie Harsh, Amber McMillan, Franchesca Cardillo, Anna Saxton and Krista Johnson; and in back, Katie Platt, coach Jolene Ross, Marisa Hanna, Maggie Loney, Amana Bowman, Taylor Harden, Bailey Brandt and Natalie Wilson. Their final season record was 12-3.
Anna Saxton closed out the game, hitting five-for-six from the foul line and contributing a total of 10 points to cinch the lead for the Spartans.
Franchesca Cardillo hit a clutch three-pointer during the Spartan comeback and finished with five points.
Natalie Wilson added three points and Amber McMillan added two points to finish out the scoring for the Spartans. Both Wilson and McMillan dominated rebounding in the final stanza.
