The Canfield speech and debate team competed at the Ohio High School Speech League - Youngstown District Tournament hosted by Howland High School on Feb. 1-2. This is one step of the state qualifying process in speech and debate.
At the end of this tournament, Canfield earned more state qualifiers than any other team with 33, followed by Cardinal-Mooney with 24 qualifiers, Howland with 16 qualifiers, and Austintown Fitch and Columbiana, both with 12.
Individually, the 33 state qualifiers so far for Canfield are: Katharine Morrison, Mia Battaglia in Oratorical Interpretation; Katelyn Baltes in Original Oratory; Tim Nesnidol, Dominique Favre, Paige Brucoli in Humor; Nathan Pecchia, Lydia Scheel, Emily Damelio, Vivienne Favre in Drama; Mike Sorice, Maria Kenner, Arjun Subramanyam in United States Extemporaneous; Richie Abel, Alec Kan
in International Extemporaneous; Brandon Brooks, Amanda Benson, Libby Urig, Samantha Armstrong in Prose & Poetry Reading; Rosie Jo Neddy and Mary Elizabeth Monda in Duo; Gary Zamary, Daniel Yozwiak, Angela Pupino in Impromptu; Andrik Massaro, Bailey Sandin, Sara Lytle in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; and Julie Gemmel and Rayann Atway, Stephen Gant and Maleck Saleh, Kareem Soliman and Kevin Min in Public Forum Debate.
For the past two seasons, the Canfield speech and debate team has been state runners-up at the annual Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament. This year, the tournament will be co-hosted by Canfield High School and Boardman High School on March 1-2.
