Boardman Middle Schools finished in second place overall in a field of 20 teams in the regular season-ending Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Junior High Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9.
Weight class champions for Boardman were Donovan Turney at heavyweight and Carlo DeNiro at 134 lbs. Second place finishers were Karl Nail at 110 and Alex King at 160. Finishing third were Derek Slipkovich at 86 and Richard Fisher at 172.
Caeden Rodgers at 142 picked up a fourth place plaque, while Gino Cicchillo at 80, and Adrien Ocasio at 205 took home fifth place awards.
Scoring valuable points for the Spartans and finishing in sixth place were Nick Leonardo at 150, Julian Vargas at 160, and Denzell Lucas at 172.
DeNiro won Most Valuable Wrestler as voted on by the EOWL coaches. He finished with three pins for the tournament and his record now stands at 31-1 with 29 pins on the year.
DeNiro will be competing Feb. 10 at Steubenville High School in district competition. Also making the trip to Steubenville are Slipkovich, Nail, King, Rodgers and Turney. The top six placers at the district advance to the state championship at the Covelli Center in early March.
The second place showing and the number of placers for the junior high Spartans is the highest in years, thanks to the efforts and leadership of coaches Justin Powell, Doug Velasquez, Ricky Zupko and Ryan Holmes.
