The Boardman United Methodist Church will be having its third annual Sue Hernan Memorial Chili Cook Off 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27. The event is sponsored by the church's mission committee and named after the late Sue Hernan whose heart and vision set the tone to create an event that would support mission's trips and projects. Hernan graduated from Boardman High School, lived in Austintown and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Warren.
Proceeds from the event will be used by the church's missions committee to sponsor and support missions work around the world. The missions group has been active in rebuilding New Orleans after the Katrina Hurricane, rebuilding of Joplin, Mo., after the tornado; the Haitian earthquake and other natural disasters around the world. In 2008, Hernan led a team from the church to Juarez, Mexico, to rebuild a church. Other missions work by the church has centered on the Mahoning Valley; the tri-county area and though out the state of Ohio.
The community is invited to join in the meal at the church, 6809 Market St., Boardman.
