Argus Lodge #545 Free & Accepted Masons recently installed Russell W. Gillam Jr. of Canfield as master of the lodge, where he will preside for the coming year. The title of "master," instead of "president," reflects the Masonic tradition of using ceremonies and titles from the stonemasons of the middle ages. When the great cathedrals of Europe were being built, the mason in charge of a building site was referred to as a "master of the work."
Gillam was born in Youngstown, in 1944. His family moved to Bradford, Pa., where he grew up and graduated from Bradford High School in 1961. After serving in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer from 1963 to 1966, he moved back to Canfield where he now lives with his wife Susan. He has five children: Russell III, Christopher, Beth Gardner, Allison Sandusky and Abby Stouffer.
Gillam joined Argus Lodge in 1969 and has been serving as an officer since 1973 and past master of 1979. He is currently a consultant for AT&T after retiring from AT&T in 1992.
He is a member and past presiding officer of the Valley of Youngstown, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, York Rite and The Order of the Eastern Star.
