The Canfield Community Concert Band will present benefit performance for Operation Blessing at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at Canfield High School on Cardinal Drive.
A volunteer group of more than 40 members, Operation Blessing distributes food items to Mahoning County families in need. Housed at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, Operation Blessing is supported by several Canfield area churches, high school groups, and local businesses as well as individuals.
There is no admission charge for the concert. To help carry on its mission, support for Operation Blessing is requested in the form of nonperishable food items and monetary donations
Betty Brindiar, the director of Operation Blessing, reported that donations from the community are crucial because the organization receives no government funding.
"In addition to our monthly food distribution, at Christmas Operation Blessing helped 170 families with food and toys to make a brighter holiday," Brindiar said. "Donations brought to the Canfield Community Concert Band performance in January are an essential part of our outreach to the community throughout the year," she added.
The concert program, "Wind Classics from the UK," will highlight music of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The program includes "Beatles Love," a medley of well-known Beatles tunes such as "Because," "Eleanor Rigby," and "Hey Jude." A second medley of popular songs in the program is "The Magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber" with "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." The drone of the Scottish bagpipe and the stamp of the Highland fling will be heard in "Four Scottish Dances" by Malcolm Arnold. The haunting strains of "Danny Boy" will be performed in Percy Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry." Additional dances and songs will round out the program with Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" presented in honor of the recent Christmas holiday.
Founded in 1976, the Canfield Community Concert Band has grown from 12 players to a concert band of 50 individuals who volunteer their time and talent to bring musical entertainment to area residents. The band is under the direction of Brian Harris.
