Fitch senior named All Region

Austintown Fitch senior soccer player Ken Kilpatrick got a special Christmas present in December when he was selected for the all-region team. According to Austintown Athletic Director Rob Conklin, it is a prestigious honor.

"Ken was just voted to the all-region team," Conklin said, "that includes Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. The top 50 players are selected irregardless of division."

According to National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American chairman John Mayer, the regional team starts with each state.

"The state has a process that either by voting as a whole or by a committee that ranks the players from their state," Mayer said. "Each state is allotted so many All Region slots by a percentage of their membership to the National High School Boys Coaches membership."

He said, for example, if there were 1,000 high school boys coaches in the region and state A had 100 high school boys coaches as members, State A would be entitled to 10 percent of the total number of high school boys on the All-Region team. Nationally, there are 365 All-Region slots, so State A would have gotten 37 slots.

"So, the criteria is set by each state," Mayer said. "They rank their best players and then the allotment numbers come into play."
