Still time to catch light display

For those who still haven't had the chance to see the Boardman Park Christmas Light Display, this weekend offers a chance. The display will continue to run up to and including Jan. 6 from 5 to 10 p.m. each evening.

This year's display has a new element to it as music and coordinating lighting have been added. Boardman Park Executive Director Dan Slagle said it was due in part to an anonymous donation.

"An anonymous donor gave us the computer software and connectors to put on a music and motion display," he said.

The only item the park had to purchase was an FM transmitter with roughly a half-mile range.

As far as assembling the new display, park part-time grounds keeper Jace Melnick fit the bill. He had experience setting up similar displays for his church and was familiar with how the system operates.

When the display was opened over a month ago, people were flocking into the park and many parked in the parking lot across from the Maag Outdoor Theater to enjoy the musical display while tuned to FM 88.9.

While visiting the display, motorists may notice the lack of speed bumps in the park. Slagle said the paving program was the park's big capital improvement project for 2012. He said over two-thirds of the park's main roadway was resurfaced.

"The last time it was paved was in the mid 1990s," he said.
