First Night committee ready to go

December 20, 2012
By J.T. Whitehouse , Town Crier

Canfield First Night's schedule is complete as committee members prepare to issue in the new year on Dec. 31. The schedule includes five venues with some new performances.

"Right now we are working on our new website," said First Night Canfield Executive Director Barbara Smith. "We are changing it from .com to firstnightcanfield.org. It should be up and running this week."

One new performance that Smith noted is Rotary Exchange student Alicia Nicolas from Belgium. She is a pianist and will be showcasing her talents at Old North Church.

"It's something different," Smith said. "We are engaging an exchange student into our program."

Also new will be a karaoke contest for all ages that will take place from 10 p.m. to midnight at Old North. Participants will be competing for prizes that will be given out at the end for those still present.

The evening will kick off with the popular dinner show at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street. It will feature Sidekicks, a female quartet that combines musical talent with comedy.

One change this year is the teen venue. It won't be separate as in past years. Smith said it will be combined into the other venues and the hope is that teens will want to participate in the karaoke.

The venues this year will include Old North on Herbert Road, Lord of Life Church on North Broad Street, the Presbyterian Church on West Main Street, and Canfield Village Middle School. Buses will be running between the venues so families can move around easily.

"We will still have a lot of people involved from our safety forces to people working the church kitchens," Smith said.

The evening will wrap up with the fireworks display at midnight. The display will be shot off from Township Park and those wishing to see it can park at Old North Church.

For those looking to purchase this year's buttons, the office has moved from the Village Green area to Always Yours in the plaza next to McDonald's on East Main Street.
