Christmas shopping without the traffic

Students at Poland Union Elementary went Christmas shopping on Monday, thanks to the PTO. They set up the annual Poland Union Santa's Workshop and students were able to buy presents for all the members of their family, even their pets.

"Since our kids can't drive and don't have a license yet, this event gives them a chance to shop for gifts," said Poland Union Principal Mike Masucci.

Each year the school's PTO holds a Santa's Workshop that has gifts for the kids to buy for their family members. PTA chairperson Leslie Kopkash was in charge of stocking this year's store and she did a great job providing a wide variety of items from Nerf footballs to candles and lotions. She even had some dog toys to satisfy the four-legged family members.

“My doggy Gage will love this,” said Poland Union kindergartener Aiden Catheline. The young shopper got to choose gifts for his family during the school's Santa's Workshop, put on by the Union PTO.

Prior to the shopping day, the students are given a paper to take home so they can make up a shopping list. They have a $10 limit, which means they can buy up to 10 items. Everything at the shop is a dollar.

PTO Vice President Michelle Ray said the event doesn't raise money for the PTO, since it generally just breaks even on the event.

"We do it for the kids," she said. "They get to learn how much they can buy and what they can get with a budgeted amount."

This year's Santa's Workshop had a new element with S&T Engraving and Awards of Poland. The business set up several tables with Poland Bulldog clothing and blue and white engraved items.

"It's like a mini-fund raiser and we do all the work," said S&T employee Michelle Perry.

She said owners Shawn and Renee Mulhall worked with the PTO to offer the Bulldog items and then will give a percentage of the sales back to the school. Perry said the business will be doing the same for the other Poland schools and their Santa's Workshops as well.
