Poland Library reopens Friday

December 6, 2012
Special to the Town Crier

The Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County will reopen at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

The library received an opinion from recognized air quality consultants, Lawhon & Associates, Inc., from Columbus, that the Poland branch can be reopened contingent upon the elevator containment system remaining in place for the time being. The library's elevator will remain out of service. The sealed-off elevator is being separately ventilated. The Library will continue to try to identify the cause for a long-term solution.

A report from Lawhon & Associates notes that testing this week showed that, "There were no sulfur containing compounds - including Hydrogen Sulfide - in any sample at any location inside the routinely occupied space of the library." Hydrogen Sulfide has been indicated to be the cause of the unusual odor in the library and parking lot catch basin areas.

The library is handicapped accessible, with an entrance on street level for library use and an entrance off the parking lot to the lower level, where Kravitz Deli, the meeting room and the Friends of PLYMC Book Store are located. Anyone requiring assistance for access can contact the Poland Library for more information.

Kravitz Delicatessen will reopen on Friday when the Poland Library opens. The Friends of PLYMC Bookstore will not reopen until Monday, Dec. 10. When they do reopen, they will feature a half-off book sale through the end of December.

Books and materials checked out at the Poland Library prior to the closing did not accrue extended use fees during the time the branch is closed.
