Ron Borngesser, a member of the Austintown American Legion Post 301 and a volunteer at the Austintown Senior Center's Veterans Corner, is getting closer to a goal of providing a home to a deserving veteran.
"I am trying to get a house built in Austintown for a veteran and his family," Borngesser said. "I have been working on this project for two years."
He said he has been meeting with Austintown trustees and various veterans groups throughout the Mahoning Valley. Things really started moving when he recently met with the Mahoning County Land Bank.
"We looked at seven sites, of which two are in Austintown," Borngesser said.
He said Habitat for Humanity told him if he could get the land, they would build the house and include any handicap amenities such as a wheelchair ramp. The veteran, however, would have to meet Habitat's criteria for a home.
With the promises made, Borngesser is now searching for a veteran in need.
"I am looking for a veteran who needs a house and a fresh start," he said.
Anyone who knows of such a veteran or wants to help with the project, can contact Borngesser at 330-720-9780.
Borngesser said once the first home has been built and occupied, he hopes to make the homes for veterans program an annual event.
