Glenwood Middle pulls three-peat

October 25, 2012
By Jim McCreary , Town Crier correspondent

In the nearly 50-year history of the Center Middle vs. Glenwood Middle football rivalry, better known as the Spartan Bowl, last Saturday's game was the first ever to see an overtime period. In the battle between the two schools, neither side was able to get close enough to the goal line to put the ball in the end zone during regulation time.

The Glenwood defense forced five Center turnovers during regulation, with three fumble recoveries coming from Sean Birchfield and one each from Anthony Davanzo and Nick Stamp.

After a scoreless first half, Glenwood turned the ball over twice in the second half, one on an interception and another on a blocked punt. The blocked punt put Center inside the Glenwood 20 yard line. The BGMS defense held and took possession on their own six yard line. BGMS then began a fourth quarter drive that covered 93 yards. Gaven Strines completed a 35-yard pass to Davanzo at midfield. BGMS continued to move the ball and connected on a pass from Strines to Davanzo to reach the Center one yard line as time expired.

In the overtime period, Glenwood would be the first to get the ball on the 20-yard line and they would strike on the second play from scrimmage with an 18-yard pass from Strines to Davanzo in the corner of the end zone. Birchfield then capped off the possession with a two-point conversion that put BGMS up 8-0.

Center's possession took a few more plays, but Mike Melewski's 15-yard pass to Austin Barone would see Barone dive across the goal line to make the score 86. Center's attempt at a two-point conversion would be stopped by a strong Glenwood defensive line.
