In their first match of the season, Boardman's Lady Spartans soccer team lost a hard-fought match to the Austintown Fitch Falcons, 4-2. Since that game, Boardman would take their record to 9-7-1 and Fitch would go 8-8-2, seating the teams in the District No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
Last Thursday's match would be another battle, but the edge seemed to be on the side of the Lady Spartans who would score their first goal inside the first 30 seconds by sophomore Alison Green. Green would finish the night with three goals, while junior Nikki Hillard would add one, as would sophomore Alexis Cailor.
The Falcons had their opportunities in the first half taking seven shots on goal. Lauren Bower nearly put a header in the net off of a corner kick but it went off the cross bar. Jayme Ritchie would score Fitch's only goal with 7:28 to play in the match. Fitch goalkeeper Jessica Scott made six saves and Boardman's keeper Kristen Huck had 11 saves.
Boardman's Nikki Hillard and Fitch's Mandi Koch battle for control of the ball.
Boardman won this match, 5-1.
The Spartans beat Green, 1-0, on Tuesday and play for the district championship against Jackson on Saturday in Massillon.
