Special to the Town Crier

For the first time in five years, the Boardman girls cross country team is heading to the regional championships to be held on the Spartans' home course on Saturday, Oct. 27. The seven varsity teammates consisting of sophomore Jordan Grantonic, junior Emma Schwendemen, freshman Elly Larrier, junior Brandi Gatte, senior Daisy Corso, sophomore Julia Lewis and junior Trista Cunningham endured the hills of the Malone University course to claim the fifth and final spot.

Grantonic placed fifth overall in the district competition, covering the 5000m course in 19:27. Schwendeman was the second Spartan to cross the finish line in 16th place with a time of 20:15 followed by a breakthrough race by Larrier, 32nd place in 21:09. The balance of the scoring included Gatte, 37th in 21:22, Corso, 39th in 21:25, Lewis, 44th in 21:30 and Cunningham, 52nd in 21:54.

"Awesome. That's all I can say," remarked coach Stacey Hunter. The Spartans will be at home this Saturday facing their toughest competition of the season in the regional championships.
