Last season ended with Canfield and Howland battling for a Y.A.C. 140-pound Superbowl title, which Canfield won 6-0. This season's regular season matchup wasn't as close. Canfield used a variety of weapons in 52-14 rout of the Tigers.
Canfield took the first possession right down the field and Vinny Fiorenza scored from one yard out. Canfield's defense spent a lot of time in the Tiger backfield. Howland only crossed the 50-yard line once in the first three quarters. Tyler Stein took a Tiger fumble and Canfield took over at the Howland 33. Four plays later, Glenn Griswold scored. Another four and out by Howland gave Canfield the ball at the Howland 38 where Paul Brienz ran it to the endzone. PJ Hallof recovered a Tiger fumble on the Howland 30 yard line. Nick Crawford scored from 15 yards out. Another four-and-out for Howland led to 23-yard Paul French touchdown. Canfield led 38-0 at the half.
Howland's second half started with a fumble recovered by Jacob Donadee. The Tigers held the Cards out of the end zone, but on their first play, Carter Myers snagged an interception on the Howland 24. Four plays later, Richie Herrera scored from the 10, Ross Perry added the PAT. In the fourth quarter, Howland got on the scoreboard with a couple big runs. Richie Herrera added Canfield's final score with a 37-yard sweep left.
This week, Canfield's 140-pound Little Cards will face the Austintown Little Falcons. Both teams are undefeated and feature tough defenses and high scoring offenses. Y.A.C. League Playoffs will start next weekend. Canfield will have a bye then play the Conference championship at Cardinal Stadium. The Superbowl will be held Nov. 4th at Hickory High School in Hermitage, Pa.
