Senior spends summer shadowing doctors

Canfield senior Olivia Roy, daughter of Dr. Prakash Royu and Mamta Roy, had an interesting summer. She took part in a special internship through the Cleveland Clinic that allowed her to work in her field of interest, namely neurology.

According to high school Principal John Tullio, the internship is offered to students who will be entering their senior high school year. It is an internship that allows them to observe doctors in their chosen field and complete two months of study.

To get the internship, students have to take and pass a test. Only those with top scores make the cut. This year, the Cleveland Clinic offered 170 internships, but had to select from 700 applicants in 18 Northeast Ohio counties. Roy made the cut and was accepted.

Canfield Superintendent Alex Geordan gives a special Board of Education proclamation to senior Olivia Roy, who recently completed an internship with the Cleveland Clinic.

I chose neurology because it is a field I want to go into," Roy said. "I got to work with patients while shadowing doctors."

Roy stayed in Cleveland during the weekdays for two months. She not only worked with doctors in the field, but also got to test her own theories. She wanted to see if electronic games could be put to use as therapy to stimulate patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. She recorded her findings into a report that will be available to the medical field.

"I will have my findings published in a journal," she said. "I'm just not sure which one yet."

She said most of the patients she worked with seemed to like the Microsoft Xbox 360. She liked their response to the games, but feels that she needs more patients involved in her research.

Roy displayed her research at last week's school board meeting, where Superintendent Alex Geordan presented her with a proclamation honoring her devotion and work while serving as an intern.

"She is a fantastic young lady," said Tullio. "She represents the quality of students we have here in Canfield."
