New Canfield superintendent talks to families

August 29, 2012
The Town Crier

Dear Cardinal Families,

With summer drawing to a close, our school system would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your children back to school. I know I speak for the entire school board, and district staff when I say, we are happy to have you and your family as a vital member of the Canfield Local School District.

We will be starting this year with an expected enrollment of 2,900 students in grades kindergarten through 12. Supporting those students will be one of the finest administrative, certified and classified staffs in Mahoning County. We can assure you that while students were enjoying the summer, our hard-working staff has been busy getting the school grounds, buses and class lessons ready for their return. The major focus during this coming year will be providing your children the best education we can in order to ensure they will be career or college-ready when they graduate.

The residents of Canfield will be receiving a District Annual Report with valuable information for this coming school year. A Community Survey will be found, as an insert, in this report. This survey is an initial step in the long process of creating an open dialogue with community and for future development of a strategic plan for the Canfield Local School District. We value your feedback, so please take a few minutes to complete the survey and return it in the enclosed postage-paid reply envelope within one week if at all possible. Your signature is not needed on the reply because we want you to feel free to say whatever is on your mind.

We would like to highlight the following upcoming dates for our educational community:

Thursday, Sept. 6 -Grades 5 & 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 20 - High School at 6 p.m.

The FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL is Tuesday, Sept. 4.

We encourage individuals to get involved with your children's schools or on an advisory committee at the district level. Your donation of valuable time and talent will be most appreciated. The community is also encouraged to attend a school board meeting. Come meet the five Board of Education members who you've elected to represent you in setting policy for the school district's operation. Our meetings are scheduled on the third Wednesday of each month in the Board of Education room located in the middle school, at 6:30 in the evening. We welcome an opportunity to meet and work with you.

We hope this school year will be a good one for your family. Please don't hesitate to contact us at 330-533-3303 if there is any way we can be of help to you or your children.

Alex G. Geordan, Superintendent
