An enormous opportunity awaits any young lady hoping to enhance her chances of playing high school softball.
The 14u Ohio Magic Teal traveling all-star team will be holding tryouts for its 2013 squad on three dates in mid August. Those tryout times will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, Aug. 12 and Aug. 17. All tryouts will take place at the 9-11 Memorial Field located at 800 Raccoon Road in Austintown, which is directly across from Austintown Middle School. Participants must not be older than 14 years of age.
This Ohio Magic outfit is coached by Fitch softball head coach Melody Ward and assisted by her husband and varsity assistant Steve. The Wards have done plenty in the Austintown community to start the softball careers of younger girls and to have them ready for the rigors of varsity high school competition.
"Steve and I have been working very diligently with (Austintown) youth rec programs and travel leagues," wrote Ward in an email recently. "We created these teams to better prepare our Austintown girls for their future high school softball careers."
Not only are the girls who make the team preparing themselves for the next four years, but they are also preparing themselves to succeed in various tournaments. Ward's young women won the Sluggers Summer Bash Tournament that was held over the weekend of June 22-24, finished second in the Ohio Magic Softball Tournament earlier in June and was selected to show off their skills in the national tournament in Salem, Va., Aug. 1-5.
Although the traveling team is made up of girls predominantly from Austintown, it is open to girls from other areas, too. Two players from Liberty will be on Ward's roster for the game in Virginia.
All potential players are encouraged to arrive early to any of the above-mentioned tryouts in order to register. Pitchers and catchers will be expected to stay an hour after the tryouts conclude. All girls should plan on bringing their own gear.
