Special to the Town Crier

Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club has had a busy summer so far.

The group rewarded students by giving three $500 scholarships to area students. This year, recipients were graduates Brian Wolfe of Jackson Milton High School, Jessica Tseng of Canfield High School, and Samantha Srock of Mahoning County Career and Tech Center.

The club also participated in the Canfield July 4th parade by selling their famous BBQ beef sandwiches and hot sausage sandwiches.

They also welcomes new members, inducting Katelyn Amendolara, a teacher at Jackson Milton High School, along with her mother, Christine Amendolara.

Delegates were chosen to represent the club at the Ohio District of Kiwanis 95th annual convention. These voting delegates are Robert Little, Robert Thomas and Wally Sinn. Another member, Barbara Smith, is running for governor elect of Ohio Kiwanis. If elected, she would serve from Oct. 1, 2012 to Sept. 31, 2013 and then serve as governor from Oct. 1, 2013- Sept. 31, 2014. She is being contested by Jennifer DeFrance of Ravenna. The convention will be held Aug. 10 to 12 at the Holiday Inn, Boardman with a Saturday luncheon and delegate session to take place at The Georgetown. This is a first time for the convention to be held in the Youngstown Warren area. Smith is serving as convention chair.

Once again, the club will work a stop during the annual Fred Perry Poker Run being held Aug. 19.

Plans are being made for the club's annual Cow Patty Bingo, which takes place in September. Tickets will go on sale soon.
