Laying of roses honors vets

The Korean War Veteran's Chapter 137 will hold its Laying of the Roses ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 24 at The Korean War Memorial in Wickliffe Circle on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.

The public is invited as well as township officials, families and all relatives of veterans or those currently serving in the military.

Service Members, past and present, are invited to lay a rose for the 122 KIA's from Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties.

The Mahoning County Marine Detachment will be there to pay homage and lay a rose for Joe Kelly, a fallen Marine hero from Korea who is a recipient of

the Medal of Honor.

The wreath will be laid by U.S. Army Retired Lt. Col. Rod Hosler who served in the 19th Support Brigade Group in Korea along with Leo Connelly Jr. who served in Vietnam from 1966-68, was awarded nine air medals, three Army commendation medals, Airwing's Medal. In 2011, Connelly was inducted into the Ohio Hall of Fame for valor as well as Veteran of the Year in 2011.

Guest speaker will be retired Army Lt. Col. Walter Duzzny of Austintown, and there will be a 21-gun salute as well as The Rolling Thunder.
