Registration is now being accepted for the 2012 Austintown Championship Hot Dog Eating Contest, being held as part of the Austintown Wickliffe Block Watch's annual Block Party, Saturday, June 30, at Wickliffe Christian Church, 3939 Potomac Ave.
"The block party is a great way for neighbors to meet neighbors." June Galbraith, captain of the south Wickliffe area stated. "It's a fun, free day for families, with something for everyone."
There will be contests held for three age groups: 8-12, 13-16, and 17 and up. There will be cash prizes awarded to the top eaters. The contest is open to all Austintown residents and businesses, and is limited to 10 participants per event with pre-registration required. Last year's 8-12 group winner, Maya Gamertsfelder is raring to go this year, and her father Cody, co winner in the 18 and up group says he already started practicing.
The group is also looking for anyone with an old/antique/cool car to come out and show off their ride. There will also be a Chinese Auction with gifts like area restaurant gift certificates, passes to Scrappers games and Austintown Bounce, gift baskets, Falcon Wear, and many more. A special door prize drawing will be held for an overnight stay for two at Mountaineer Race Track & Casino.
The party runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with live music, games, face painting, fun and crafts with The Green Team, and demonstrations by area safety forces. The event always closes with a giant water balloon fight for kids and adults. The Block Watch will provide free food to all who attend. Beverages will be provided by the Austintown Police Department.
The Block Watch meets every other month on the first Tuesday of the month at Wickliffe Christian Church. Meetings are open to all residents and businesses in the Austintown area.
