West Side Cats, a local animal shelter, will hold its first Poker Run and Bike Show on Saturday, June 16. Registration will start at 10 a.m. at the Covelli Center, with the first motorcycles scheduled to head out at 11 a.m. The ride will cover 82 miles, with three stops along the way, and will finish at Boardman Park, where burgers, hot dogs and soft drinks will be served.
The bike show will take place at Boardman Park and will feature nine categories, with trophies for first, second and third place in each category. There will also be three special trophies awarded Falcon's Choice, presented by host corporation Falcon Transport; the Don Cockroft Award, presented by the Cleveland Browns' Cockroft; and the Smoochie's Choice Award, named for shelter mascot Smoochie. The first 100 bikes to register receive a free West Side Cats magnet.
There will also be a Chinese auction, a silent auction and live music provided by J D Eicher and the Goodnights. Cockroft will be there signing copies of his book, "The 1980 Kardiac Kids - Our Untold Stories." There will be prizes for the best poker hand as well as a 50/50 raffle. The run will benefit West Side Cats, a cat rescue and adoption center located on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. West Side Cats is a no-kill shelter run and staffed entirely by volunteers and supported by donations and their own fundraising efforts. They specialize in special needs cats and kittens. Mascot Smoochie is a paraplegic cat who scoots around the shelter using a specially designed cat wheelchair.
