The Boardman girls track team traveled to Canton McKinley on Tuesday, May 1 for their final dual meet of the season in the Federal League. They came away with a 76.5-60.5 win to end the dual meet season with a 3-3 record and an overall record of 4-3. They are in a tie with Canton GlenOak for fourth place in the league.
In the field events, junior Giovanna Silvestri took first place in the discus throwing 109 feet, 9 inches and second in the shot put throwing 35'-1/2. Junior Katrina Watkins threw 98-7 to place second and senior Megan Howard was third in the discus with a toss of 91-8 1/4. Freshman Ka'Nisha White was third in the shot throwing 33-10. In the pole vault, junior Sarina Mauerman was first with a vault of 9 feet and senior Jenny Bresnahan was second jumping 8 feet. In the high jump, sophomores Trista Cunningham and Kelly Tomcsanyi were second and third respectively, both jumping 4-4. Sophomore Nikki Hillard was third in the long jump with a leap of 14-3.
The running and hurdle events scored 48 points out of the team total of 76.5 showing good depth. The 4 x 800 meter relay team won in a time of 10:43.9 consisting of sophomores Emma Schwendeman, Brandi Gatte and Cunningham and freshman Regan O'Hara. Freshman Jordan Grantonic won the 1600 in 5:29.5 and also won the 3200 in 12:42.3. Schwendeman was second in the 1600 running a season best of 5:33 and second in the 3200 in 12:51.2. Junior Daisy Corso took third place in the 3200 running 13:10. In the 800, Regan O'Hara was second running 2:32.3 and Cunningham took third running a season best of 2:35. In the hurdles, freshmen Hope Landers placed second running 16.8 and Stephanie DeMain was third running 17.3. DeMain came back later in the meet to run a season best time of 51.8 placing third in the 300 meter hurdles. In the short sprints, senior Lesley Koch ran a season best of 26.8 in the 200 to place second and was third in the 100. Koch also anchored the winning 4 x 200 meter relay team in a season best time of 1:49 along with freshman Heaton O'Hara, senior Tori Moore and sophomore Nikki Hillard. In the 400 meter dash, Moore raced to first in 63.0 and Heaton O'Hara was second in 63.2, both posting season best times. Hillard was also third in the 200 running 28.3
On Saturday, several members of the team traveled to the Fitch Optimist Meet, a prestigious meet with over 30 teams competing in both boys and girls competition. The 4x800 meter relay team of Heaton O'Hara, Schwendeman, Regan O'Hara, and Tori Moore ran a season best time of 9:47.66 placing not only second, but qualifying for the National Scholastic Outdoor Championships which will be held later in June in North Carolina. Each girl ran their season best split to make the qualifying standard of 9:50 in the emerging elite division. Grantonic ran 5:29.59 in the 1600 meter run placing fourth in a big field. Silvestri threw a season best of 35-11 1/4 placing seventh in the shot and placed eighth in the discus throwing 115-9.
