Matthew Cardello, 12, son of Beth and Matt Cardello and a student at Holy Family School in Poland, was calling the Covelli Center home this month. He competed in the OAC Junior High State Wrestling Championships.
In February, he took first place at the OYWA State Championships tournament at 82 lbs. At OYWA he wrestled for the North Akron Wrestling Club. At the state championship, he moved up to compete against much older wrestlers.
Most sixth-graders don't or can't compete against this field of seventh- and eighth-graders. However, he not only competed, he placed fourth out of the 48 junior high wrestlers in his weight class.
Cardello placed fourth at this tournament in 2011 at 65 lbs, and he was a favorite to compete for the title this year at 80 lbs. He did not disappoint. Winning his first four matches, he ended up in the title match. In the championship, he faced fellow teammate from Team Miron of Columbus, Jaden Mattox. Mattox was able to get the best of Cardello securing a 6-0 victory.
