The Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency located in Canfield is gearing up to host its annual golf outing on May 21 at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club. The event is a key fundraiser for the organization that serves the entire Mahoning Valley.
"This fundraiser hopes to raise money and awareness of the services and programs provided at no charge to those suffering from MS," said agency spokesman Joseph Chevraux. "These programs include an Adaptive Aquatics Program at two local YMCA's, support group meetings, free equipment loan program administered through Canfield Medical Supply, MS Clinic at St. Elizabeth Health Center, educational programs and workshops, MS newsletter, and counseling/referrals."
He said on top of those programs, the agency is hoping to get a new program up and running this year. It will be a therapeutic riding program at a local horse training facility.

The team of Bill Shoaff, Mark Dewberry, Richard Novicky, and Richard Heydle are expected to be among the teams participating in this year's annual Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency golf outing. The team is from the Poland and the surrounding area.
The local MS agency has been able to keep services local, serving the Tri-County area. The nonprofit agency was formed in 1991 after the National MS Society moved their offices out of the Youngstown area to their current offices in Independence. Seeing a need to continue to serve the almost 800 patients with multiple sclerosis in this area, the nonprofit agency was created. Chevraux said all money raised by the Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency stays right here in the Mahoning Valley.
The agency is funded through local support and receives no money from federal, state or outside sources. The golf outing was developed to help meet the funding needs of the agency.
"This is the second year for the golf outing. Last year was the first year it was put on since 2002," Chevraux said. "We are looking for 100 participants for 2012. Last year, being the first year since 2002, we had 50."
He said the goal is to raise $10,000 and to sweeten the pie, this year's event will feature celebrities.
"Many celebrities have been invited to participate in this event," he said. "As soon as acknowledgements are made, we will post their names. Actors, professional athletes, coaches, racing legends and golf professionals have been personally invited for this event."
For information on the event, contact Joseph Chevraux at 330-533-6772 or by email at MSSAOH@gmail.com.
Chairman for the golf outing is Mark Smallwood. Other committee members are Kevin Freisen, Sara Mastrangelo and Krista Reese.
The agency also hosts the MS Super Walk being held Sept. 23 at Mill Creek Park.
