Narcotics K-9 unit visits Lions Club

March 2, 2012
Special to the Town Crier

The speaker for the evening meeting Monday, Feb. 13 of the Austintown Lions Club was Mahoning County Deputy Sheriff Larry McClaughlin. McClaughlin is assigned to the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force and is also assigned as narcotics investigator. His partner in service is Mercy, a two-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois dog that came from Holland and began her training in narcotics detection.

Officer McClaughlin and Mercy were teamed as partners in August 2010, when Mercy was seven months old. Her commands are all in Dutch.

There was a demonstration part in the presentation as Mercy proved time and time again her prowess as an outstanding drug-sniffing canine. She entertained the Lions and guests with much enthusiasm as she found several samples of cocaine and marijuana that were earlier hidden throughout the meeting room by McClaughlin. Training is a constant thing for the pair.
