The Boardman High School swimmers knocked off four school records and advanced eight swimmers to the Division I Ohio State Swimming and Diving Championships last weekend at C. T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Junior Ryan Bailey led the Spartan swimmers by winning the district title in the men's 100 butterfly in a school record-breaking time of 49.66. That time broke Ryan's old mark of 49.86 set in December 2011. Ryan also placed third in the 100 yard breaststroke at the district meet by posting a career best time of 58.88. He is seeded 15th in breaststroke at states. He was also in the state qualifying 200 medley relay with seniors Alec Santamas and Alex Downie and junior Nick Barone. Boardman's sixth-place time of 1:39.98 advanced the team to the state meet as the 22nd seed.
The Spartan ladies broke three school records on their way to qualifying for the state meet. Junior Gaby DeAscentis's 13th place time of 1:01.12 in the 100 yard backstroke broke the mark of 1:01.60 set by Ashley Aldan in 2010. DeAscentis picked up another school record as the lead off swimmer in the state qualifying 200 medley relay. She was joined by freshman Brooke Bailey, senior Emily Bodamer, and junior Colleen Manning. Their sixth place district time of 1:51.23 broke the old mark of 1:52.20 set by last year's team of DeAscentis, Aldan, Jessica Gonda, and Bodamer. Boardman's 200 medley is seeded 21st at the state meet. The Boardman school record also fell in the last event of the district meet. Juniors Jordyn Markovitch and Manning teamed with sophomore Jessica Hilk and Bodamer to set a new school record of 3:41.83 in the 400 freestyle relay. The old mark of 3:42.83 was set last year by Manning, Markovitch, Bodamer, and Aldan. Boardman placed 10th in this year's event.
