Girl Scouts' cookie campaign goes high tech

February 16, 2012
Special to the Town Crier

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio led the way for Girl Scouts across the country to use smart phone credit card readers, which is a convenient way for cookie customers to pay for their purchases on the spot with a credit or debit card. This year, GSNEO has added another tool to its technology marketing kit: texting.

Girl Scouts are known for their community service projects, and through Operation: Sweet Appreciation, GSNEO has sent more than 100,000 boxes of cookies to members of our military since 2008. Customers who wish to support local Girl Scouts can text the word SWEET to 80888, and a $10 donation will send three boxes of cookies to U.S. military troops. The $10 charge will appear on the donor's cell phone bill.

"The cookie sale is a financial literacy program that is directly related to our purpose of helping all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful leaders," said Chief Executive Officer Daisy L. Alford-Smith, Ph.D. "Girl Scouts learn life skills and are able to realize their goals-and they have fun. Customers get a great product and get to support girls in their own community."

Every cookie has a mission: to help girls do great things. Thousands of troops in Northeast Ohio use the money they earn selling cookies to fund service projects in the very communities where their Girl Scouts live. Proceeds from the cookie sale support Girl Scouting and leadership development programs in our local community. Additionally, the Girl Scout Cookie program teaches girls five essential skills, including business ethics, goal setting, money management, decision making and people skills.

Girl Scouts have come a long way since cookie sales began nearly 100 years ago. Girls today use several platforms to advertise their cookies. The Cookie Club is an online tool that girls (with the help of their parents) can ask for cookie promises using an electronic order card, keep track of their sales goals, and share information about their service projects. The Cookie Locator is a free app customers can download to their phone. Enter a zip code and the app will help customers find cookie booths in their neighborhood. Girl Scouts are techy at booth sales too. Troops are able to accept credit cards through smart phone technology.
