Two candidates have been selected as finalists for the position of director of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and the public is invited to hear from these candidates and ask questions at a public forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the meeting room of the Poland Library.
Each candidate will speak for 15 minutes. A question-and-answer session will be moderated by Dan and JoBeth Bradbury of the firm of Bradbury Associates/Gossager Sager Associates, which is assisting the PLYMC search committee with this process.
Candidates are John S. Weedon, currently volunteer coordinator of Foodshare, Hartford, Conn., and prior deputy chief librarian, administrative services, for the Hartford CT Public Library; and Juliet Machie, deputy director of the Detroit Public Library.
"This event represents an opportunity for the general public and news media, along with Library staff and trustees, to have a closer look at candidates for our system's next director," says Dr. David Ritchie, chair of the Library's Board of Trustees and chair of the Director Search Committee. "We hope the public will take advantage of this opportunity to attend, ask questions and learn more about these candidates."
In July, current Director Carlton A. Sears, announced that he would be stepping down as director after 15 years of service, which have been highlighted by a myriad of accomplishments. At that time, Sears noted that he would stay until March 30, to ensure a smooth transition. The Bradbury firm was hired to help with the search and the application and interview process has been unfolding over the past few months.
Members of the Library Board of Trustees Search Committee are: Dr. David Ritchie, trustee president; plus trustees Alex Benyo, and Delores Crawford; Library Director Carlton Sears; Library Assistant Director Mary Pullin; Library Human Resource Director Ruth Bradshaw; and community member Joyce Brooks, who has actively participated in sessions of Library Strategic Planning, including the current Library 2011 plan.
