Boardman Glenwood Middle School's eighth-grade Lady Spartans started their season Dec. 5 with a 41-37 win over a strong Austintown Blue team. Leading the way for the Spartans was Krista Johnson with 14 points and five steals, and Bailey Brandt with eight points and seven rebounds. Natalie Wilson added six points, Katie Platt and Ellie Hritz each chipped in four and Taylor Broll sunk three points. Marisa Hanna added three points and offered outstanding defense down the stretch. The team is coached by Andy Wade and Lauren Susany.

Their seventh-grade counterparts didn't fare as well as AMS Blue came out fighting in the second half, ending with a 30-14 victory over the Spartans. Leading scorers for BGMS were Lauren Pavlansky with eight, Taylor Halowell with four, Maryssa Wagner with two and Alaina Hufnagle with one. The seventh-graders are coached by John DePietro and Courtney Pilch.

The BGMS boys took a hit this week too, when the eighth-grade squad dropped their opener, 42-38 against AMS Blue. They showed great team defense and Preston Stitt led the offensive attack with 19 points. The team is coached by Jim Bennet.

Likewise, the seventh-graders took a 41-28 hit after being tied at halftime. Leading scorers were Mark Smaldino, Bryce Richey and J.R. Ryan. Justin Coffin and Dave Nypaver coach the young Spartans.
