German students welcomed in exchange program

December 5, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
At the Nov. 21 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, members had a chance to meet and greet students from the 7th Annual Austintown-Boardman Hennef Exchange Program. The students from Germany stayed with hosts from Austintown and Boardman. Students from Austintown and Boardman visited their German friends in the spring and our Thanksgiving season was chosen to give the German boys and girls a chance to experience an American holiday.

This program was started by Sigliende Warren, and has an 11-day commitment with students living with local families. So far, 108 students, 16 teachers, 15 news articles and 180 parents have been involved in the program.

Students are responsible for speaking English, attending school and doing whatever the host-student does. Students learn about the area, traditions and the fact that movies do not accurately depict either German or American society.
