At the Nov. 22 Austintown Board of Education meeting, it was announced that the board plans to hire Kate Gavalier and Jeffrey Swavel as assistant principals of the district’s new elementary school building. The assistant principals would be given charge over kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grade buildings respectively. Construction bids on the new buildings will be opened this month and the assistant principal positions will not be under administrative contract until Aug. 1, 2013.
Gavalier and Swavel will collaborate with the administrative team and staff in prepration and planning for the new buildings, but compensation will not commence until the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
In other business:
• A resolution was approved, authorizing and directing the administration to prepare plans, specifications and related information to conduct bidding for the purchase of a mobile medical unit, made possible through $500,000 received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Affordable Care Act, earmarked for health-related services.
• A resolution was approved in opposition to House Bill 136, which would significantly expand the availability of vouchers for students to attend private or parochial schools. Board members urged those present to contact local legislators. Board member Dr. Tom Stellars said, “House Bill 136, if passed, will have a disastrous impact on public schools.”
• The board set the next regular meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Austintown Middle School.
