Unless it’s your birthday or anniversary, Nov. 8, 2011 probably isn’t circled on your calendar. This is the date of this year’s general election. It’s an odd year election so it’s not all that sexy. Besides SB-5, I think most people would be hard pressed to name anything else that will be on the ballot.
For me, as a Poland resident and father of two children who attend Poland schools, I am very interested in the Board of Education race. We have two incumbents, two challengers, and three seats to fill. No matter what, we will have at least one new face on the board in January 2012. Also, we have a rematch of the 2007 race in which one of this year’s challengers lost to one of this year’s incumbents by only six votes. If that’s not enough to intrigue you, it is very likely that the three board members elected in November, along with the two sitting members, will be responsible for hiring a new superintendent during their terms.
So, if you live in the Poland School District and have an opportunity to meet any of the candidates, a good first question would be to ask them what they will look for in hiring the next superintendent.
