Boardman Sports Notes

• Boys Varsity Golf

The Boardman boys golf team won their last match of the season against Austintown Fitch, ending with a 12-5 record. Boardman was led by Jake Fait who shot a 36. Darian Wilson shot a 40; Brad Dofka a 42; and John Diamond finished with a 46. Boardman finished with a 164 total. Austintown Fitch shot a total of 183. Their team was led by Brain Bassista and Adam Catauro each shooting a 44. Vince Goleno shot a 47, and Dom Ignazio shot a 48. Sectionals began on Monday for the Boardman boys team at Candywood Golf Course.

• Boys Varsity Soccer

Four Spartans scored two goals each to lead BHS to a 3-0-1 Federal League record on the season after defeating Canton McKinley on Sept. 27. Senior Drew Rober scored twice and also booked two assists for the Spartans. Both of Rober's goals came off assists from senior Christian Silvestri. sophomore Luke Marsco also found the net twice, scoring one lone goal and another assisted by sophomore Alex Thomas. Junior Nico DiIanni's two scores were assisted by sophomores Sam Mathey and Fabio Bassil. Senior Matt Horvatich tallied one lone goal and another assisted by Mathey.  Bassil and Mathey each registered goals as well, both coming off assists from Rober.

Junior Anthony Caluatti had two saves in goal for Boardman, which now holds a 5-2-3 overall mark on the year. 

The guys went on to defeat Ursuline on Thursday, Sept. 29 by a score of 12-0. Senior Matt Horvatich paced the Spartans with three goals, while the Thomas boys added three more goals; one from senior Eric Thomas and two from sophomore Alex Thomas. Goals were also netted by Silvestri and senior Michael Billett, DiIanni and Alan Olson, and Mathey and Marsco.

Assists on the evening's effort came from Silvestri (2), Horvatich (2), Junior Pete Ryan (2), DiIanni, Mathey, Alex Thomas, Rober and Bassil. Calautti registered two saves as the first half keeper. He was then relieved by freshman Brian Fryda who tallied three saves in the second half. The win took the Spartans to an overall 6-2-3 on the year.

 • Glenwood Volleyball

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School eighth grade volleyball team defeated Springfield on Sept. 27 by scores of 25-20 and 25-19. Krista Johnson posted eight aces and seven kills. Katie Platt had nine assists and one ace. Elli Hritz had four kills, two digs and one assist. Hayley Eicher had three aces and two kills. The girls went on to defeat AMS Blue over the weekend by scores of 25-14 and 25-13. Platt had nine assists, five aces and one dig. Hritz had five aces, four kills and one assist. Johnson had three kills, two assists and an ace. Caitlynn Conner had four kills and one ace. The girls improved their record to 12-1.

The seventh grade girls took a loss to Springfield 18-25 and 11-25. Taylor Halowell had four aces and two kills. Nicolette Martino had three assists and Katelyn Snyder had two aces. The seventh grade girls record is now at 1-11.

Over the weekend the seventh grade team took a loss to AMS, 25-23, 22-25 and 26-28. Charlotte Voytko had four assists, two aces and two digs, Faith Clear had four aces and three kills. Halowell had five aces and one kill. Martino has two aces, two digs and one assist.

• Varsity Girls Soccer

The Spartan girls soccer team is having a breast cancer awareness game on Monday, Oct. 10. They will be playing West Branch High School. All proceeds will benefit the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Dr. Rashid Abdu will be present at the game and also speak at the short ceremony between the JV and varsity games, at approximately 6:15 p.m.

• Glenwood Football

The Boardman Glenwood football team, for the third time this year, knocked a team out of the ranks of the undefeated. AMS Blue shared their 5-0 mark with the Spartans, but suffered a loss at home after the Spartans posted a 20-14 win on Sept. 28.

Lynn Bowden scored in the first quarter on a 31-yard touchdown run. The Falcons answered with a 48-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to go up 8-6. The Spartans then drove to the Falcon 2 yard line, but lost the ball on a fumble to stop their scoring drive. The Falcons scored again to lead 14-6 at the half.

In the second half, the Glenwood team scored on the first possession of the third quarter when Bowden scored on a nine-yard run and converted the two-pointer to tie the game at 14 all. In the fourth quarter, a quarterback sack and forced fumble by Dom Pastella led to Alex Birchfield picking up the loose ball and returning the fumble recovery over 70 yards for a 20-14 lead. The Spartan defense shut out the second half to seal the win. The total team effort improves the Spartans record to 5-0.

• Glenwood Cross Country

The Boardman Glenwood cross country teams ran at the Clipper Invitational in Columbiana over the weekend. Elly Larrier finished fourth overall with Lauren Pavlansky and Taylor Broll finishing in the top 30 to help the team to a fifth place finish overall.

The boys posted a fourth place finish overall as Matt Perham led the way coming in 10th. Brett Brunko and Dylan Ball had strong performances, finishing 19th and 20th respectively.
