The Boardman High School boys soccer team remained undefeated in Federal League action as the Spartans played to a 1-1 tie with Uniontown Lake on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Senior Matt Horvatich evened the game at one just before halftime off an assist by junior Nico DiIanni. Junior Anthony Calautti had five saves for BHS as keeper.
The JV team also battled the Blue Streaks to a tie. Freshman Zach Fryda scored just 15 seconds into the match off a pass from sophomore Luke Marsco. Freshman Anthony Pallante put the Spartans ahead 10 minutes into the second half. BHS held that lead for 23 minutes, but gave up the tying goal with 1:43 remaining. Freshman Brian Fryda logged seven saves as the Spartans' goalie.
On Saturday, Sept. 25 both Boardman teams defeated Niles McKinley. DiIanni scored twice against the Red Dragons thanks to assists from seniors Christian Silvestri and Andrew Peters. Silvestri also assisted on a goal by Horvatich as BHS won by a 3-1 margin. Calautti registered four saves in the nets.
The JV team held a 1-0 lead at halftime in Niles due to Pallante's goal off an assist by sophomore Sam Mathey. The Spartans reserves then found the net five times in the second half. Pallante scored two more goals, while Mathey, junior Pete Ryan and freshman Vince Mancini each tallied goals. Mathey logged two assists, while Mancini, Ryan, junior Dalton Taylor and freshman Zach Stamp also booked assists in the 6-0 victory.
The Spartans now hold a 4-2-3 mark on the year and are 2-0-1 in the Federal League. The JV ran its record to 6-1-2 and are also 2-0-1 in league play.
