The U.S. Department of Education named West Blvd. Elementary School, in the Boardman Local Schools, as well as 303 additional schools nationwide, as a 2011 National Ribbon School based on their overall academic excellence or for their success in closing achievement gaps. The department will honor the nationally recognized 255 public and 49 private schools with their National Blue Ribbon School awards at a conference and awards ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washington, D.C.
“America’s long-term economic prosperity and civic engagement depends on our children receiving a world-class education,” Duncan said. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their success is an example for others to follow.”
Alphonse Cervello, principal of West Blvd. stated, “We strive to give our children the best education possible and to do this my staff and entire school family work in conjunction with the parents and their extended families to ensure proper, continuous and open communication. Due to this team approach, all of the stakeholders understand the expectations for our children here at West Blvd.”
The National Blue Ribbon School award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve at high levels or where the achievement gap is narrowing. Since 1982, more than 6,500 of America’s schools have received this coveted award.
West Blvd. Elementary School has been one of the states highest performing kindergarten through fourth-grade schools for the past few years. Last year, West Blvd. had the highest Performance Index score of any K-4 school in the state of Ohio. Cervello said that the programs in place are designed to meet the individual needs of each student and the commitment to excellence has enabled our entire school community to come together for the benefit of our students.
