The M&M Golf Classic is in its 13th year. Its beginnings go back to 1999 when a bunch of friends just wanted to get together for a fun outing.
“It started 13 years ago with 32 friends,” said official helper Lynn Sahli of Boardman. “Every year more and more friends were invited. Now we are at 144.”
The first three years of the event, named after founders Mike and Mark Sahli of Boardman, wasn’t used as a big fundraiser, but was just a fun outing.
“Initially it was just a bunch of friends getting together,” said Mike Sahli. “It was always a goal to grow it and focus on children.”
In 2002, progress was made and the event generated $150 that was donated to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Funds continued to rise and in 2010 the event brought in $2,520 for Akron Children’s Hospital. This year’s event proceeds are still being tallied, but organizers of the event have selected Akron Children’s Hospital and Hospice of the Valley’s Hospice House as those who will receive donations.
For the golfers, the goal is to raise the funds while vying for the honor of wearing the championship jackets. M&M Golf Classic doesn’t have a huge trophy or plaque, but instead has four M&M sports jackets that are passed every year to the championship team. Team members get to wear the jackets up to the next event when they may have to pass them on.
“They are passed on from winner to winner every year,” Lynn said.
Lynn’s role in the event is to handle check in and ensure that the luncheon is organized. She also helps send out the invitations over the summer and said it has never been a problem getting spots filled.
“I send out the invitations and they come back really fast,” Lynn said.
She said once someone has played in the event, they want to come back the next year.
This year’s winners recorded a score of 56 to earn the right to wear the jackets. Next year they will return and the jackets will once again be up for grabs and two local men continue a tradition of helping children’s causes while having fun.
