Township accepting bids for road project

September 1, 2011
By Richard Sberna
The Poland Township Board of Trustees held a special meeting Monday afternoon discuss upcoming township business.

During the brief meeting, trustees voted to advertise for bids for an upcoming road-paving project. The roads slated to be repaved include Lee Run Road, Coblentz Drive, Katahdin Drive and Bendemeer Way. Township administrator Jim Scharville said that since the bidding process is only just under way, it would be months before construction work begins.

The board approved a motion to appoint Robert Younger and James Sullivan as casual officers of the Township Police Department, pending their passage of physical exams and background checks. According to Chief Brian Goodin, they will then be sworn in as casual officers of the department at the next trustees’ meeting, which is scheduled for Sept. 13. Younger and Sullivan will then undergo a field training program and observe uniformed officers during ride-along assignments around the township.

A notice against nuisance properties in the township, defined as those with garbage, overgrown vegetation, junk motor vehicles and other debris, was also passed. According to the resolution, owners of those properties must clean them up or make an agreement with the township within seven days (14 days for properties with junked vehicles). If no action is taken by that time, the township may initiate a cleanup of these properties, with expenses taking the form of a tax lien on the property, to be paid by the owner.

Properties targeted by this notice include: 4149 Arrel Road, parcel #35-066-0-006.00-0; 2519 Bedford Road, parcel #41-104-0-024.00-0; 2816 Center Road, parcel #35-007-0-037.00-0; 3163 Highland Ave., parcel #35-034-0-054.00-0; 2517 Hilltop Drive, parcel #35-056-0-046.00-0; 6792 Lowellville Road, parcel #35-100-0-003.00-0; and 2811 Spitler Road, parcel #35-057-0-013.00-0.
