August 11, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
The Canfield 9- and 10-year-old softball team won the Little League state title in Portsmouth on Aug. 4 after defeating Elyria, 8-7. In a rematch of the winner's bracket championship, Canfield scored two runs in the top of third inning, four runs in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the sixth before holding off their opponent. Elyria scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to add to their five runs before Canfield recorded the final out. Key hits in the game were from Emerson Fletcher, Jill Baker, Taylor Lampe and Madison Terlizzi.

Great defensive plays were made by Mary Gomez, Alana Marzich and Serena Sammarone. Superb catching by McKenna Carey and Mallory Vaclav kept Canfield in lead. A combination of pitching by Jill Baker, Alana Marzich and Taylor Lampe left Elyria guessing at the plate. Canfield was managed by Kirk Baker and coached by Derick Fletcher, Pete Carey and Bill Lampe.
